We have developed a program that allows you to create your very own typeface!
You will use an iPad to capture your handwriting for a personalized typeface. The iPad is running web application that using HTML 5’s Canvas. The files that you create are then sent to a program that is being run on a CIAS server.
The back end of the project is where all of the font files are created. The server has a Python script constantly running that waits for new directories containing all of the images inputted by the user.
When it receives a new directory, it spins off a new thread to process it. This thread vectorizes all of the PNG images, adds them to a font, and then modifies the kerning and other important properties so that the font looks as good as possible for the user.
Most of this is done by using a library to interface with FontForge, an open source application used for creating fonts. Each font is then named appropriately and placed in a specific folder on the server so that the user may download it at their convenience.
Please enjoy Fonts from your Fingertips and feel free to ask any of the exhibitors any questions you may have about this project, or typography in general!
